Marketing in a “Changed” Economy

by socialheavy on March 24, 2011

I wish I had a dollar for every time that I have heard someone say “the economy is bad.” First of all the economy is not bad, the economy has changed my friend. And guess what? It’s not changing back, at least not the way we knew it prior to 2008.  And in many ways that’s a very good thing. We all have to learn to live in our current economy the ways things are and learn to THRIVE. Even though things aren’t so great we still have to live, buy food, provide for our kids and do all the things we did before. So re-evaluate your business. If your business does not succeed well in these times perhaps it’s time to learn something new or morph your business into something else. Part of being successful in business is keeping your ear to ground, being flexible, and being open to new ideas. Roll your sleeves up and find a way to make it work. And for Christ’s sake stop making excuses!

I too have fallen into this trap, it has caused me to be afraid, it has kept me from being successful and committing to things I knew were right. I too have been driven by fear of what is to come, and I am over it (this is a very recent development). We have to get in there and find what works, otherwise you may as well just throw up your hands and quit.

I was in the print/media industry for 8 years and made a GREAT living at it, that ended. And it has taken me a long time to get over it. A very long time. But my grandmother always told me that when God shuts a door he opens a window. Social media is my window. And it can be a window to your business too. You may not have money to place print and radio ads anymore but for a lower cost (but a larger investment of time) you can use social media to make a difference in your business.

I see so many businesses that could use social media so much more strategically and yet they just use it to throw things against the wall to see what sticks. That’s not going to cut it. If you want the benefit you have to do the work. You can hire someone like me to coach you on it and figure out a strategy for you or you can roll up your sleeves, read, research and figure it out on your own. Find new alternative ways to breathe life back into your business. Things may never be the way they were before, but we can adapt to our new environment and use the tools we have to make things the best that we can.

Cheers!

Tammy

Tammy this is right on target! Thank you for posting this. I also had to make changes because the economy changed. It was harder and took more time than I ever thought it would. But I, like you am on the other side and I am committed to a better way. The economy isn’t “coming back” but there are HUGE opportunities for all of us if we take them!

Hi Mike, right on! I love your attitude! And at the end of the day that great attitude will be the light that guides you down the tunnel! I believe that with all my heart.

Best,
Tammy

Tammy, it is so nice to read a blog from a likeminded person. We can’t change the economy, so we need to explore ways to reinvent our business to thrive in the new environment. The largest room in the world is the room for improvement, and the only way in is through an open mind. We all need to open our minds to the possibility that has’nt been discovered and prepare to explore!

Hi Dean, yes I believe an open-minded is the uniform for survival today. It certainly separates the men from the boys!

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and leave a comment. I appreciate it! Please come back.

Best,
Tammy
